SWM Academy Consultancy

A helping hand and expert advice for Headteachers and school business leaders.

Supporting School Business Professionals

  • All successful schools and academies should have robust financial planning at the heart of their strategic development plan.

  • This has never been more important than in the current climate of budget funding cuts

  • A key to success is being mindful of the strategic direction of the school whilst maintaining the attention to detail and careful monitoring. I work with schools to manage their long-term aspirations, making them possible via vigorous scrutiny of day to day operations and processes.

  • The role of Finance Director / School Business Manager can be an isolated one, with very few having colleagues on the senior leadership team who have experience in financial budget planning.

  • What reassurance do Trustees have that your finance lead is fully supported and they haven't misused their position?

  • The Academies Financial Handbook (AFH) sets out the financial management, control and reporting requirements that apply to all academy trusts.

  • Compliance with the handbook is a condition of each trust's funding agreement.

  • Is your Academy Trust compliant?

If your school is considering becoming an academy, some areas Heads typically are concerned about often include:

  • the Head acting as Accounting Officer, what are the responsibilities and how are they fulfilled?

  • the impact of adhering to the Academy Financial Handbook

  • accruals accounting and the various ESFA returns

  • office staff capacity to cope with the changes, particularly if they do not come from an accounting background

  • Smaller schools may not have the resources to employ a full-time Business Manager or Finance Director.

  • Other schools may require additional capacity at certain times of the year or during the absence of key personnel.

  • New Finance Directors /  School Business Managers often find the jargon used in education finance a minefield.

  • I offer a variety of financial services.
